Tinted windows!

Yesterday we drove down to Portland to get the side and rear windows in our Volt tinted.  Portland Tint Inc. installed LLumar ATC 40 film that blocks most IR and 99% of UV.  It blocks about 55% of the visible light too.  We drove home in 100F weather and felt much cooler.  The sunlight coming through the tinted windows just did not feel as hot, and the reduced glare and brightness makes for less eye strain.  The advantage is increased EV and gas range due to the reduced AC load on the battery.  We’ll probably go back and have them do the front windshield with clear as well.

Was it ATR 40 rather than ATC 40? ATR40 shows 45% Visible Transmittance (55% Blocking)and is metallized.

I called the installer because the invoice gave conflicting info. They DID install ATC40 which transmits 43% of visible light according to the LLumar brochure. It also rejects 33% of “solar energy radiation”, and gives a 50% glare reduction. These are specs, the actual experience is really wonderful, definitely less glare and less heat buildup inside which was our primary goal. Definitely a good investment! :)

Update: We decided not to put IR blocking film on the windshield because in the colder months we can still park facing south to warm the interior for free. The tinting the other windows blocks IR so effectively that the Volt barely warms up in full sun.
